Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia
Andrew Shaw, BSc, MBBS, FRCA, FCCM
Dr. Andrew Shaw received his medical degree from Saint Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in London. He completed his basic training in anesthesia at the Imperial School of Anaesthesia in London, and completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in London in 1999. Dr. Shaw spent the earlier part of his career at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. In 2005 he came to Duke, where he currently serves as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Shaw’s current research interests lie in perioperative genetics, particularly the role of genetic variation in the response to cardiothoracic surgery. Further developing his previous work in the risk of pain and morbidity after lung resection, he is using whole genome association study methodology to unravel the genetic determinants of persistent post-thoracotomy pain. He is most noted for his 2008 paper in the New England Journal of Medicine reporting an association between adverse cardiac surgical outcomes and aprotinin. His other work includes the International Perioperative Genetics and Safety Outcome Study (iPEGASUS), a perioperative genetics collaboration in patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery from around the world. He has also published extensively in the field of cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury. In this area he serves as SCA representative to the Acute Kidney Injury Network and he is the site principal investigator for the Southern Acute Kidney Injury Network, funded by the NIH.
Dr. Shaw is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK) and an elected Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. In 2006, he was the co-recipient of the ANZCA Harry Daly Research Award (for the iPEGASUS study) and he also received a presidential citation from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2007. He serves on the program committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine and was elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists in 2008. He has over 100 scientific publications, including 47 original peer reviewed papers.
