Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Mark F. Newman, MD

Mark F. Newman, MDDr. Mark Newman received his medical degree at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Wilford Hall United States Air Force (USAF) Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Newman briefly came to Duke University in 1988 as a Fellow in Cardiac Anesthesia before returning to Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center to serve as Director of Research and Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. During that time, he also held an appointment at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center as a clinical assistant professor.

Dr. Newman returned to Duke in 1992 to lead the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine to international prominence. In 2001, he was appointed as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and as the Merel H. Harmel Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology. He currently also serves as:

  • Chairman of the Board, Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic
  • Professor of Medicine
  • Medical Director, Global Perioperative Research Organization
  • Director, Perioperative Organ Protection Consortium

Dr. Newman is best known for his research on neurocognitive decline after surgery. His research effort over the last 2 decades has had three broad goals: 1) identification of perioperative risk factors for postoperative neurocognitive decline 2) the testing of hypotheses related to the causal mechanisms of neurocognitive injury and 3) interventional trials designed to reduce the occurrence of neurocognitive dysfunction. He is also an internationally recognized authority on perioperative outcomes. Dr. Newman has published over 200 manuscripts, book chapters, and editorials and is the editor of 2 major anesthesiology textbooks including Longnecker’s Anesthesiology.

Some of his awards include:

  • Robert D. Dripps, M.D. Memorial Award for the Outstanding Fellow/Resident in Anesthesiology, Duke University Medical Center, 1989
  • The Golden Apple Award, Outstanding Anesthesia Faculty, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center (1990-1991)
  • Golden Stump Award, Key Contribution to the Field of Perioperative Neuroprotection, The Key West Meeting, Outcomes (1999)
  • Bernard H. Eliasberg Medal – Significant contributions in the field of anesthesia, critical care and pain management (2006)

He has been elected a member of:

  • Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists, 1996
  • Association of University Anesthesiologists, 1997
  • Morton Society, 2003

And has been nominated to:

  • Best Doctors in America since 2001
  • Who’s Who in America and Healthcare since 2003
