Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia
F. Willem Lombard, MB, ChB, FANZCA
Dr. Willem Lombard received his medical degree from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, and completed his residency in Anesthesiology, as well as a fellowship in Liver Transplant Anesthesia, at Auckland Hospital in New Zealand. In 2002, he completed further fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Lombard was previously a member of the Division of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology but now serves in the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Basic Science Divisions.
Dr. Lombard’s primary research interests are in the prevention of peri-operative cerebrovascular complications. To date his work has focused predominantly on the molecular aspects of vascular and neuronal injury following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). He developed vivo models of SAH with long-term functional outcomes, which he employs in mechanistic and translational studies. He is currently exploring the role of microvascular dysfunction due to oxidative stress and altered nitric oxide dependent processes in the development of cognitive failure following SAH, as well as in the peri-operative setting.
