Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Steven E. Hill, MD

Steven E. Hill, MDDr. Steven Hill received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals while serving in the United States Army. Dr. Hill first came to Duke as a resident of Anesthesiology. He now serves as Professor of Anesthesiology, Co-director of both the Acute Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit and the Duke Center for Blood Conservation, and Chairman of the Duke Transfusion Committee.

His areas of research interests include:

  • Clinical trials of blood conservation techniques
  • Transfusion and clinical outcome
  • Oxygen therapeutic agents
  • Thoracic analgesia
  • Plasma volume expanders

Currently, Dr. Hill serves as Co-Director of the Duke Center for Blood Conservation which allows him to study the impact of blood management on patient outcomes and plans to be further involved in research protocols involving oxygen therapeutic agents. He also works with the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Research Endeavors group to study cardiac surgical outcomes. The Society for the Advancement of Blood Management elected him on to the Board of Directors in 2005 because of his research in effective blood management during cardiac surgery.
