Joseph P. Mathew, MD, MHSc, FASE

Joseph P. Mathew, MDDr. Joseph Mathew received his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School in Texas and completed his residency in anesthesiology and a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine. He spent 8 years at Yale University School of Medicine where he served as Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Anesthesia Fellowship, Director of the Transesophageal Echocardiography Imaging Program and Associate Chief of the Section of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.

Dr. Mathew came to Duke University in 1998 where he currently serves as:

  • Professor of Anesthesiology
  • Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
  • Director of the Neurological Outcome Research Group (NORG)
  • Director of Clinical Anesthesia Research Endeavors (CARE) Research Group

Dr. Mathew’s research interests include:

  • The relationship between metabolomic expression within the cerebral circulation and postoperative neurocognitive function.
  • The association between genotype and neurocognitive outcome after cardiac surgery.
  • Function magnetic resonance imaging to assess cognitive injury after surgery.
  • Atrial fibrillation following cardiac surgery.
  • Perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.

Dr. Mathew is a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine. He was elected Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography and served the Society as Chair of the Council for Intraoperative Echocardiography and as a member of the Board of Directors from 2005-2007. He has also been elected to the Association of University Anesthesiologists and the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists. In 2008, Dr. Mathew completed a Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Research from Duke University.

Dr. Mathew is the primary editor of the widely used textbook Clinical Manual and Review of Transesophageal Echocardiography (McGraw Hill, 2005).
