Madhav Swaminathan, MD, FASE, FAHA

Madhav Swaminathan, MDDr. Madhav Swaminathan received his medical degree and completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Delhi University in India. He attended Royal Victoria Hospital in the U.K. for a fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesia before coming to Duke in 2000 for a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. He currently serves as Associate Professor and Director of Perioperative Echocardiography.

Dr. Swaminathan’s major research focus is to identify and prevent perioperative acute kidney injury with emphasis on the impact of endogenous renal recovery processes. Currently his research focuses on the role of progenitor cells in recovery from acute kidney injury which has received research support from the American Heart Association and the International Anesthesia Research Society.  His other major area of interest is perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.

In 2003, he was awarded the Robert N. Sladen Award for Teacher of the Year in the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Swaminathan was elected Fellow of the Society of Echocardiography (ASE) in 2005 and Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2007. In 2007, Dr Swaminathan was appointed to the Board of Directors of the ASE. He also serves as a member of the Council for Intraoperative Echocardiography, the Industry Round Table, and the National Board of Echocardiography. Dr. Swaminathan will also serve as an editor of the 2nd edition of the widely used textbook Clinical Manual and Review of Transesophageal Echocardiography (McGraw Hill, 2005).
